The Village Underground is THE WORST open mic!!! THE WORST!!! Only, and I do mean ONLY go there is you want to sign up--NOT TO SING, see great singers, and wait… all night to be called. For tourists, not serious musicians. They play the FAVOR card far too often.

Its REALLY sad!

I was invited to the VU open mic by an employee, after singing next door at the Pussy Cat - being promised free entry (with a specially signed card) to an open mic that talent agents and managers would be at. This was false - they ignored the card, and asked for a $15 entry free for both audience and performers at this "open" mic. There are "reservations" that are made ahead of time though for audience and musicians - and the open mic signup spots had been taken up before non-reserve people were allowed in. given the videos of artists they have performed there, its basically an embarrassingly dated "funk" show, with performers who basically don't do original music. i.e., KARAOKE with a live band - that they charge +15$ for entry. you will find better singers and free entry (and original songs - not covers) at many other better open mics in the city.

And, the advertisement blatantly lies - saying that it is the longest running (and most prestigious) open mic in the world… if they're willing to lie like that up front, you know its a sham. The host uses some uncomfortable name-dropping to get 15$ out of young musicians that he promises the moon to and seriously under-delivers.

Look at the website for the open mic - it looks like it really is NOT an open mic at all. It's an "open mic showcase", with showcased featured musicians - i.e., you can't really just go and sign up. Oh, and there's a 15$ cover charge. Don't call it an open mic if it's not an open mic - it's insulting to the actual tradition of open mics.
