Is this actually an Open Mic or is it as the letter below describes? Let's not watse each other's time.

The letter below is false. It was written by an angry, belligerent patron of the bar. He was offered to play first, but declined even after being told the list was full. Please visit youtube.com/vicsopenmic. Everyone gets to play, the host sits in when asked. Please do not be swayed by the below letter, we have a great professional time and you won't be sorry.

Is this actually an "Open Mic" or a house musician with friends? I just don't want to waste my time.

This is a copy of the letter to Vic's boathouse regarding their non-open mic night.

if your bar ever advertises open mic night again, it's a fraud. We showed up there at 830 pm last night. We signed up 5th. After 3 hours of the host playing and other variations featuring the host, we departed wondering what act of nature would allow our performance. I think our bar tab was up to $50 at that point. When the host went up to play for the fourth time, I knew we weren't going to get a shot. What a rip off. It's not the price of the drinks, it's what we were sold on… open mic. It was not open mic by any stretch of the definition.

The host played at least 15 songs over three or four sets. Four of his friends played in sets. We were there before equipment set up and never did get to play. People that showed up after us got to play.

Let me describe what you should advertise. It's a House Musician with friends. You have a house musician that lets select friends play. Don't ever say it's open mic again, if you do, it's a lie.

The basic problem that I see is your host is so into his own music, he does not care if a high spending tourist rolls in wanting to play. He is going to play several sets and let you sit there on the slim chance he lets you play one song near the end.

We have better things to do than watch a house musician play for three hours. We think he's a great musician. But we don't come to watch him play in 70% of all performances.

Stop calling it open mic. It's not that, it's not even close to that. I'm not coming back because I doubt my letter will change anything.

Signed, High spending tourist… a first and last time customer. I say high spending tourist because I'm from out of town and I buy the good beer. As opposed to a few locals that got to play were drinking PBR in a can. We don't expect preferential treatment because we buy top shelf liquor and spend double what the locals do. But we do expect to be given equal time at the mic. We were shut out for 3 hours. Arrive first and play last if at all. That's not an open mic night. I just despise false advertising. Open mic, my ass!
