- I've been going to Open Mic's at the Thumbnail Theater for about 6 years now. They used to be once a month, many more kids than adults, and in the theater. When Wired and Unplugged shut down, Tim picked up their Open Mic that was every Friday. I was a littel scared walking into the first one in the Gold Room, because I had never performed in there before and I wasn't sure how the sound might work. There were a lot of older musicians there and I wasn't sure how I might come off. I found I enjoyed the music more… it was more adult. I was 13 when I started going to Open Mic's at the Thumb. Now, I'm 19 and I have grown into my own level of confidence and have grown to love the sense of community and comraddery at the Thumb. I have been taking voice lessons from Tim for 5 years, and he helped on my Senior Project so that I could graduate from high school. Though I have known some of the members of Open Mic for a much shorter time, I feel like I have a new family, all uncles and cousins who see me as the little kid they've watched grow up. I was incredibly fortunate to find a such a blessed place to perform and develop, and I owe a great debt to everyone who walks through its doors.

They recently moved this open mic into the main auditorium (a former church). They also went to a lottery system to determine when you go on. Depending on how crowded it is, it's either 2 songs/7 minutes, or 3 songs/15 minutes. Lately the 7 minute limit is more common.
The sound is much better in the big room, but some of the intimacy of the "Gold Room" has been lost. It's a tradeoff, but this is still a great open mic in the town of Snohomish. Lots of good talent and a very supportive community.

Yeah, it's a trade-off, but it is part-and-parcel of what a successful open mic that has been created. The intimacy can and is there, but it helps that people don't get up and walk in front of the performers while they are doin' their thing (not everyone realizes the distraction). The room itself looks and sounds great and it gives many performers a better feel to push their stuff up a notch. The lottery system helps keep folks around for other performers and, well, it puts everyone-in-the-same-boat, as it were; so, give it some time.
Chalk it up to "growing pains".
