Sweet Strings really began in 1998, but never formally had a name. At that time, there were no 5 String fiddles and very few mandolins available in the area and many fiddlers and "folk musicians" had a really hard time sourcing quality instruments. There are a number of very fine "violin shops" who cater to the Classical Music world, but very few who are comfortable or familiar with fiddling, folk music, or even play the music themselves. Adam's interest lay in assisting friends and associates with sourcing the instruments and later supplies they needed or wanted from China and South Korea. SMI, Inc. (a materials and supplies company) was born in 2001, and in 2004, Adam opened Sweet Strings to provide a location, a destination spot for musicians and players to come and comfortably play the instruments, look at the cases and bows, and hang out. The rest is history as they say.

The open mike is for musicians, primarily, but poets and comics are welcome also. There is a $15 registration fee. Artists that register get first dibs.

Currently the open mike is held at the Sweet Strings location, although we are looking for a bigger space. McCarthy's in Belchertown has been approached. Later in the spring/summer/fall the concert will be held outside, weather permitting.
