I've played open mics all over the world in 9 different counties, ( I know good for me etc… ) this one isnt anywhere near as important or special as the people running it think it is. It doesnt help that newcomers are for the most part given high numbers and treated with suspicion and passive hostility. The sound is great though if you have the patience and can afford to but drinks for the 7 hours you'll likely be there

I"m heading back east from SF CA, this will be my first time in New York in almost 20 years. I look forward to rocking out at the Sidewalk Café, I've heard it's the best open mic in town!

The open mic is all ages, I've seen kids performing up there. They do a random number drawing, same as always. I've gone on at 9:30, 12:30, 2:30. It seems as if some of the acts who have shows that week perform early, but random people perform early as well. It's the best open mic in the city, but not if you want your beauty sleep.
