Professionally run, with a friendly host (at least on Wednesday night). They have a dedicated soundperson, and the space is quite good. Currently they lack performers - so you can get at least 3 songs in, in a night. They have 4$ beers - and for that location looks like a great deal.
Performers were more eclectic than you'd find at some other standard open mics (Vivaldi, Bar 4), and the songwriting tends on the more adventurous, which makes it both better and worse (though i'd say better all things considered). A decent crowd of non-performers there as well. Signup is done via signup sheet, so you can pick your time. Performers were courteous and listened to one another's performances.
They have a drum kit, but no piano, and plenty of mics - so for groups, this is not a bad place to go to for that. (Other open mics are a little crowded re the performance space.

Stanley Wu is the new host for Wednesday nights. Our official sign-up time is at 6:30pm, and we run from 7-9pm. The Tower of Song Open MIc is currently Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Thanks!

The Tower of Song, is a brand new open mic night starting August 3rd 2010, 6pm to 8pm three nights a week at R Bar in Manhattan, NY. Each night is curated by a local musician who will lend their unique personality and talent to the night. We encourage you to sign up ahead of time as space is limited.
