I've been to this a few times over the past 6 months. Great sound system with an actual sound guy who does a nice job; you get a longer set than most other places I've been to; and a nice, roomy stage as well. I don't get why more folks aren't coming out to play here. Decent size bar crowd who are mostly blissfully ignorant of you, but seem open to original songs as well as covers. A down-side: the young guy who emcees it doesn't seem to give fair time to all the performers; there may be some favoritism with people he knows. To illustrate, I got 5 original songs, the crowd actually was listening, but I was then told to wrap it up, while the next guy got almost an hour doing mediocre covers, heh. I certainly appreciate the 5 songs, don't get me wrong--that's more than you get many other places! But open mic should be about giving equal time to everyone, period. If that's no sweat to you, this is a good open mic and worth the trip to Lansing to play. Show up about 9:30 p.m., they watch hockey, etc. here… and you'll still be able to play in the first four slots.
