The Hopvine, for those who know their Seattle open mics, is a quality venue with a great crowd that makes you earn your applause. The number of people attending can be intimidating for some - the place is consistently full, most of whom are there as patrons and not performers.

The food is fantastic - awesome grinders, pizza, soups and salads and a great list of rotating taps (including Georgetown's 9 lb Porter). This Jerry guy apparently thought he was at Burger King and not at a jam-packed pub in Capitol Hill - take his critique as you will, I guess. I think the people working the bar at the Hopvine are some of the best around, and my food always arrives hot and tasty.

And just so you know, Dave Hates Chico will be taking over the hosting duties for the next several weeks. Signup is at 8:00, and the show runs from 8:30 to 10:30. We hope to see you there.

The Hopvine is a joke. Very expensive. Slow service… and when I say slow, I mean S L O W. The wait staff is very rude too. This tends to bleed into the open mic experience and I won't ever play there again.

I just called the Hop Vine to confirm sign up time and they said 8:30PM is sign up.

I had fun. People did talk over the music, but a lot of folks listened too. The sound was mediocre. They need to widen the stage.

After observing this open mic for a while, I came to the conclusion that it was the #2 place to play, behind the EMP on Sundays. Now I am not so sure. Having said that, I played the Hopvine last night and was not impressed. The sound is really bad from the stage and the host/sound guy doesn't pay attention when you are playing. He sets the levels and off you go.

There is a really good crowd here usually but they can't really hear you. That said, I would recommend playing this place because everyone needs experience playing a small venue with bad sound. There are some cute chicks here and the other musicians are really supportive and nice.

I rank this Open Mic a 7 on a scale of 1 - 10. It would have gotten a much lower rating but there were probably 50 - 60 people in attendance and I had a good buzz going.

Next time I play on a Wednesday I am going to check out Murphy's Irish Pub in the U-District. Who knows, maybe I'll come back to the Hopvine.
