- Went out to this open mic last night, and there were a few changes since I'd last been there, so I had to make some corrections to my post below. Nick is no longer emceeing at this point; it's now the owner, Rob. I'm seeing familiar faces from other Chicago open mics there; there were about 12 or more performers, so it's well-attended, I'd get there by around 8:30 p.m. to sign up if you want to get onstage early. Rob does a nice job, 3 songs per set, the sound system is fine, the sign-up sheet is honored and performers given equal time. I think if I'd stayed later Rob would have allowed people to come back up after the roster was completed. There were also a couple keyboard players; very refreshing. Worth the trip!

- This is one of the only open mics still being done by Nick Gonzalez, a pro who is among the best open mic emcees in the Chicago area. Let's be honest: if you spend the effort, time, and gas money to get to an open mic to play for free, you want to be treated fairly and get your time in at the mic. I have been to so many of these over the past 10 years in Chicago I can't even say, and Nick is one of the rare guys who consistently: 1) respects the signup list (which is in his head AND accurate), 2) respects the same amount of set-time for everyone, 3) let's you back up if there's time, 4) will play along with you if asked, 5) knows it's not about him. This one is the real deal; generally classic rock, pop, R & B, but originals are also celebrated at this little hole in the wall bar. Sets are usually 3 to 4 songs per time up.
