? Is this a good venue for my 13 year old daughter (vocals/guitar) to start cutting her performing teeth? Mainly covers of Taylor Swift, Natasha Bedenfield, Miley Cyrus, Cobie Colait, etc.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for all the nice comments on my open mic at Firefly's in Framingham, I wanted to try and and answer a few questions that have been asked… No, an 11 piece band won't fit in the tiny space they give us, that's why we can't do drum kits and probably why this series has morphed into mostly a singer songwriter type event but pretty much anything goes, acoustic or electric, 3 people is tight and 4 is pushin' it…

There is no piano, bass players need to bring a small amp, we have 2 mic's/stands and a pretty sweet sounding bose/mackie pa system with nice effects. We're holding our own even with the economy woes… Stop by when you can… btw, Larry Oppel will be hosting on 11-26-08, my band is in NH that night at the Village Trestle in Goffstown. I also host an open mic every Tuesday at the Colonial Inn in Conord, same format as Firefly's.

Stop by and see me soon and thanks for your support! best,k

Bruce runs a top-notch open mic with amazing musical diversity and talent. The only "problem" is that it's gotten so popular the sign-up list gets long, so get there early! As a blues harmonica player and vocalist it's a pleasure to have Bruce back me up on guitar (he can play nearly anything you ask stylistically) and do some old country blues songs together. It's a great alternative to fully amplified blues jams where you're fighting to be heard over a drummer and loud guitarists.

This is a very popular acoustic based open mic with an emphasis on, but not limited to, singer songwriters. We have solo's, duos, trios and the host will accompany any players that request it.

We've recently celebrated our 2nd year anniversary and there's a real "buzz" throughout the music community about this special night. You'll hear original music, blues, folk, jazz, rock, cutting edge, old timey, to name a few. Musicians play acoustic guitar, harmonica, dobro, pedal steel, lap steel, stand up bass, sax, banjo, percussion (no full drum kits)vocals, mandolin… The consensus with both performers and the audience is that this is an open mike with a very warm vibe, no pressure and very welcoming to both new and experienced musicians alike. There's frequently lots of collaborations with other players and new musical relationships have formed from this open mic. To date, we've never done a featured performer and musicians sign up the night of the show on a first come first serve basis. No advance signups by phone or e-mail. There's a 2 song limit as we usually average 12-18 players nightly.

The host is Bruce Marshall, a veteran musician of 34 years with national experience. A talented song writer, vocalist and guitarist, he's led his own bands for years in the NE area and nationally as a member of the Toy Caldwell Band. The band toured with Charlie Daniels, Lynyrd Skynyrd and others and appears on a cut from Marshall's second CD, "Love of the Ride". He's currently busy doing solo dates, shows with the 5 pc. Bruce Marshall Group and as half of "Montgomery and Marshall", his duo with blues legend James Montgomery. Marshall has performed with over one hundred national acts and continues to average 200 show a year. Check out the fan reviews on his site and see what others are saying about the open mic.
