why call it an open mic if there is a performer playing for half the night? i DON'T get it. it's actually hilarious to me.

you are right on that one Adam, I came from marlboro 2 weeks ago and the Texas Fundamentalist lady running it told me… "Im sorry we had too many people sign up by phone"… So I just stayed and listenned both the performers and the counter help complaining about how they are forced to work friday nights and their perpetual rudeness to their clientel.

Just an update as we try to accommodate all performers for our local supportive audience. Sign up starts at 6:30-6:45pm. Open mic usually starts at 7:00pm with 3 song limit (12 minutes max.) before 8:00pm feature and 2 song limit (10 minutes max.) after feature ends at 8:40pm. 3 song limit permitted after feature if time permits - if it's really busy, 1 song limit to accommodate everyone! We don't charge a cover and all $$$ collected during the "Pass the Hat" goes to the featured performer. The Coffee Depot has asked that we end at 9:50pm so the establishment can close promptly at 10:00pm. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR THEIR COOPERATIVE SUPPORT!!

Yeah the whole "feature" concept is how musicians and "hosts" pull a bait and switch to assure a captive audience. I've run open mics and they're not rocket science. Three concepts for fairness: 1.)Keep a list 2.)Abide by time/song limits 3.) If any egotist and the gang of sycophantic friends and family they lured in gets to thinking the affair has magically turned into their personal gig… give em the hook.
