A great, fun and welcoming crowd with some shining standouts. Sang my first open mic ever there two weeks ago and had a helluva time. Great full house, good food, kind host and a CD of our spot. I hate the "pay to sing" concept but Passim's a non-profit, so I'll cut them some slack.

As of April, 2007, Passim has gone back to a no feature, 2 songs per person format. Still $5, free for members.

I wasn't impressed. This place has a huge reputation, and it has obviously fallen prey to a common open mic occurence - it gets too popular, it gets too crowded, population falls off because noone wants to deal with the hassle anymore, and then noone knows when it's cooled down again. Perhaps. That's my conjecture. The website claims that there are 90 some people on an open mic night, which is why there's a one song per act limit. There is a coveted feature slot which is probably still very worthwhile to persue, but the talent on the night we went was extremely marginal, and the only other people we really enjoyed said that all of their previous experiences at Passim had been similar. Noting all that, I AM going to give it the benefit of the doubt and seek to go back upon our next visit. Now, because I am who I am, I also have to note that the food is excellent, and moderately priced. There's also a $5 cover on open mic. So, one song slot, $5 cover, sign-up at 6.30pm with music starting at 7. Order determined by lottery.

Only $5.00 to perform one song? Freight and Salvage on the west coast charges $5.10 to sing for 7 minutes. Man this is a deal! My hats off to the inventive Passim Folks for starting this whole "pay to sing" thing--and for holding the line on their fees. I also hear they offer to record your music as you get your five buck's worth of song--for an additional charge, of course. Hey 60 people a night--it adds up.

A full house open mike. Must get there by 6:30 for the signup. One song for $5. but lots of listeners.
