- Decent sound system with monitors. The house band does indeed play on through most nights but also most nights are open jam/mic nights. So get in touch with the band to let them know what you're looking to do. Crowd was really cool with the material I performed which was solo acoustic.

- If you’re a budding amateur who is building confidence and wanting to get your material out there to a crowd who is at least half-interested, avoid “Bottoms Up.” I understand how a happening joint can see “open mic” as a threat, not a promise, and think: “we need a house band for the main event so that people will put up with these amateurs in-between.” My response is that if that’s your attitude, don’t have an open mic. At “Bottoms Up,” you get not an open mic, but a good-time rockin’ house band who “let” the amateurs come on-stage when they’re not playing. If you don’t care about that, you give it a shot. I was there more than a half hour and the band hadn’t had anyone up for open mic; that’s not open mic. Plus, the patrons are playing a bean toss game in front of the stage the whole time. I left.

- Acoustic open mic/jam night every Wednesday at Bottoms Up in Lansing. Under new management & ownership since 2010! A nice place with a good music loving crowd from all walks, and the hosts are supportive and accomodating, like all good hosts should be.
