? How can I get my group involved in the upcoming Open Mic?

This open mic is on TUESDAYS when there is not a regular show. Open mic in not profitable. We do it because we want small bands to get encouragement. As a service to the community. Everyone deserves a chance to play on a stage with good sound and lights. If we get a offer to book a show on a Tuesday that will help us make money we have to take it. All you need to do is look at our calendar and it will tell you when there is a show. Doesn't take much effort.

Random is the way we do it for a reason. We have found that when we signed people up first come first serve they would call their friends and tell them they weren't going on till a certain time. Bands would leave and go to the surrounding bars to drink and eat instead of staying and supporting the other bands and drinking here… in the place that is providing the open mic.

Our open mic is anything goes as long as it isn't immoral in the staffs eyes. comedy, poetry, spoken word, rap to backing track cd, full band, solo act, whatever.

I have many problems with this open mic:

  1. it's all random selection. So If I show up early (which I Usually do) I could still end up the last performer after everyone has left.
  2. They don't have open mic every Monday, there are times I've driven down there to realize they have an act booked for the Night.
  3. On top of it being random selection, they wait to do the drawings until after a band has played so If any band decides to walk in and sign up after the playing has started, then they get thrown into the mix of all the people who got there early

My suggestions are either:

  1. don't make it random. Allow the bands that get there early to decide when they want to go on. (cuz I don't always want to be the first act I usually like to play 3rd or 4th) that to me would be FAIR. Or…
  2. if you're going to do it random then do all the drawings at 1 time so that people know when they're going on. then if bands come in late they get put on the end of that list.

Hopefully you will understand that It's not worth it for me to drive 20 miles if theres a chance no one will see me play

? Does this open mic also include comedians or is it just musicians?
